What Is The Difference Between Unproductive And Productive Downtime?

Unproductive Downtime

Unproductive downtime consists of non–value adding interruptions that should be eliminated. These unnecessary stoppages act as blockers, preventing equipment from operating efficiently and producing output.

Common Examples:

Breakdown, No Operator, Unlabelled Downtime

Productive Downtime

Not all machine stoppages are unproductive. Some stops are planned or necessary and support value-adding activities. These should be categorised as productive downtime, even though the machine is not in uptime.

Common Examples:

Changeover, planned maintenance, inspection, short stops.
